Initially maintained by DDA, the market was handed over to APMC Azadpur on 1st December 1979 for maintenance and regulation.

Later, an additional 33 acres was acquired to create a new fruit market adjacent to the existing Subzi Mandi. Shahdara sub-yard became a separate APMC in 1992, and Keshopur sub-yard in 2001. Okhla fruit and vegetable market, developed by DDA, was handed over to APMC Azadpur as a sub-yard in 1987. Azadpur Railway Station has been declared a subsidiary yard for fruits like bananas, oranges, and southern mangoes.
